If any of you have ever heard me talk about Casey and her amazing ability to raise puppies, then you already know what I’m talking about. This special talent of hers is one of the reasons I wanted to raise a service dog now…so Casey could help.
Though I’m sure Casey isn’t thrilled with our choice of raising a service dog, she has been nothing but gentile and patient with Tripper. At night she lays in front of his cage and with a low growl, tells him in no uncertain terms that he needs to stop crying and get to sleep. This is a behavior she first learned when we watched our best friend Tarra’s puppy, Maya three years ago. And a technique she has used on half a dozen puppies since.
Aside for making sure everyone gets their beauty sleep Casey keeps a watchful eye on the new comer, gently barking when he steels my flip-flops or starts chewing on the table. She teaches Tripper not only the rules of the house, but the rules of a dog. As Tripper climbs all over Casey or chases her tail and even bits her ears Casey is careful to correct only impolite behavior. In return Tripper watches Casey all the time and follows her everywhere.
There is no doubt the Casey is a special dog. Though she lacks a charisma with human strangers she has a unique way of greeting every dog with the friendliest of hello’s and always being a calm assertive leader.
PUPPY PROGRESS: Tripper finally went up the full flight of stairs today all by himself...then proceeded to pee in the spare bedroom.
TRAINING CHALLENGE: Gentle leader. For guide dog training he has to get used to it...so far not so good.
